In New South Wales (NSW), Australia, the rules for driving with an overseas license have changed, impacting temporary visa holders residing for over six months. Now, those who arrived in NSW before July 1, 2023, must also obtain a NSW driver’s license if they plan to stay longer than six months. Additionally, the “Experienced Driver Recognition” status for certain countries is ending, requiring drivers from those countries to transition to a different recognition system.
Six-Month Residency Rule:
Temporary visa holders who intend to reside in NSW for more than six months must obtain a NSW driver’s license within that timeframe to continue driving. This rule applies regardless of when they arrived in NSW,
Experienced Driver Recognition End:
The “Experienced Driver Recognition” status, which allowed drivers from certain countries to convert their licenses with minimal testing, is ending. This change affects drivers from countries like Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, and others, requiring them to transition to a new system starting on April 30, 2025
Driving Privileges Withdrawal:
A new system in NSW allows for the permanent withdrawal of visiting driving privileges if a driver accumulates 13 demerit points, is convicted of a serious driving offense, is suspended or disqualified in another country, or is convicted of a drug or alcohol-related driving offense.
